While you may have visions of cable knit sweaters and intricate patterns, when you are beginning you should start small. This way you will not get frustrated and you can get your feet wet learning the basic stitches. Do not get overly ambitious. You can find an easy knitting pattern and follow that, so you can get comfortable with the basics before moving on to something more complicated. Make sure you completely read the instructions before starting out and gather all the materials you will need so you do not have to stop mid project.

Don’t improvise, follow the instructions

You may find knitting patterns for beginners that look good but you want to modify them slightly. Do not do this because you will likely get frustrated with the end result. Instead, follow the instructions carefully. Make the gauge to see the size of the needles you need to use. Do not skip this step because it will ensure your project is completed successfully and will give you valuable practice. Use the material suggested. If the easy knitting pattern calls for a particular type of yarn, make sure you use that. You can play around with substituting yarns when you are more experienced. Until then, substituting yarns may mean an uneven stitch or you may find the gauge is incorrect. Use a row counter so you do not lose track of how many rows you stitch. Also, always purchase yarn from the same dye lot so you do not see any variations in colour.

Practice makes perfect

Make a few smaller projects until you get really comfortable with all the steps. Once you are, you can start taking on larger projects. You can use gauges for a variety of useful things around the home. Potholders, coasters, trivets and even patchwork throws can be made form the gauges you make while practicing. Many baby items such as blankets and baby hats are good starter projects plus they make nice gifts. You can start out practicing on various easy patterns and then make a fun project from all your beginner gauges to memorialise your work. Once you have completed this you will be ready for some more complicated work and you will have set some good knitting habits.

The Canaries

The Canary Islands are a top choice for year round sun-worshipping. Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria and Lanzarote are the most commonly visited islands and all offer dazzling coastlines and varying degrees of action and adventure. Egypt

For something completely different head to the Land of the Pharaohs, Egypt. The country is packed full of both desert and sea treats making a visit well worthwhile. Peak season runs between October and May so to avoid crowds choose June or September.

Maximum temperatures in Cairo average over 30°C during these months so be prepared to take it easy. Heading to the coast will help you to keep cool. Sharm el Sheikh on the Red Sea a popular choice. Cyprus

Cyprus is a good early spring option thanks to its favourable Mediterranean climate. Peak season runs from June to September, so avoid these months to experience the slightly quieter side of the isle.

Visit in April and May and you can enjoy average maximum temperatures of 22°C and 26°C respectively while you laze on the beach, explore historic sites or indulge in some of the country’s delicious cuisine. Temperatures remain high into October and November, but heavier rainfall makes these months a less appealing choice so avoid them if you want to get the best mix of affordable Cyprus hotels and good weather.

I am a fully qualified designer specialising in hand painted murals for interiors. I have always been creative and started painting murals when I was 14 in my own bedroom and then I found all of my friends wanted one. We would talk through your ideas, and at this stage if you needed inspiration I would also bring along ideas, pictures, and books to look at. For children’s rooms, every child has a favourite cartoon character, theme, TV character or book so this would be our starting point. If your child is old enough I always like to ask what they would like to see in their room so we make sure the mural makes everyone happy.

Once you have decided on the size and design of the mural that’s when I can provide you with an exact cost. When I come to paint the mural – the whole design is sketched out on the wall, ceiling or cupboard etc. in pencil first, and it is at this stage that I always make sure the client is completely happy with how the design looks before any painting begins – as once the design is painted changes are hard to make!

But there may be another greatest generation that deserves recognition as well.  And that generation is the next one.  The reason that generation has the chance to be the greatest generation as well is that we have the chance, right now as the parents, the guardians, the teachers, the Boy Scout leaders, the Sunday School teachers and the mentors of these young people to show them what greatness is and how they too can be for their times the greatest generation.

To help the next generation to demonstrate that kind of greatness, we must instil in them a sense of community awareness, devotion and pride that will generate from everything they do.  If the next generation is only what used to be called “the me generation”, they will only do what makes them happy right now.  Greatness comes from doing something that means something for the community.  So by teaching our youth how to be involved in community service from a very early age, we equip them to be as great as any generation that came before.

Being of service to the community is a skill and an attitude that is caught and not taught.  So by making sure we, as the adults in their lives, are always looking for ways to get involved in community service, the youth will mimic our behaviour as youth will always do and they will catch the fever and get a taste for community service that will last a lifetime. 

A wise man once said about helping the poor that if you give a man a fish he is fed for a day but if you teach him to fish, he is fed for a lifetime.  This ethic is true about teaching our youth that community service is fun and that neighbours helping neighbours is what makes life worth living.  That is teaching our kids to fish.  And the result will be a love of community service that will last a lifetime.

We have good mentors in our quest to raise the greatest generation.  And there are outstanding youth organizations that thrive on community service and passing the torch to the next generation.  From Boy Scouts to school clubs to youth groups to the YMCA, wherever there are mentors of youth, there is community service going on.

How will we know if our quest to make the next generation great is a success?  The clues will come quietly.  When you hear your son or daughter leave the house with enthusiasm to go join in on a project to clean up the park or to sign up at the library to help children to read, you can reflect that you are witnessing the birth in that child a love of giving and a love of community service that will last a lifetime.  That is the spirit that made the World War II generation great.  By empowering our children to be servants of the community, they too will become for their times, the greatest generation.

As nice as it is to hear that internet parental controls can help to protect your child from danger online, you may be curious as to how they work or how you can get started with them.  Although you will find some variances, most parental controls for the internet are free, cheap, and extremely easy to set up.

If you are using Internet Explorer as your internet browser, which most computer users have, you have parental controls that are built right into your computer!  How neat is that?  To set these parental controls, you will want to open up a new internet window, just like you would when surfing the web.  Next, select “Tools,” and then “Internet Options,” from the dropdown menu.  A new window will appear and then you can click on the “Content,” tab.  Enabling the content advisor will allow you to start protecting your child online.

Although Internet Explorer comes standard on most computers, there are some internet users who use FireFox instead.  If you are using FireFox, setting parental controls for the internet isn’t as easy as it is with Internet Explorer.  This is because there are not any built-in controls.  With that said, they do make it easy for you to get them.  The main website for FireFox has links to add-ons that you can easily use and install.  Many of these add-ons are free of charge.

AOL is another common internet browser that is used.  AOL also has parental controls that are easy for you to use.  AOL provides parents, like yourself, with the largest options.  In addition to customizing your options, AOL also has preset controls.  These controls are based on a child’s age range.  Even if you choose to set your own options, these are great guides to follow, especially if you are unfamiliar with computers.

Now that you know you have a number of different options, when looking to get started with parental controls, you may be curious how you can make the most out of them.  Some parental controls allow you to set ratings for certain websites and choose levels that you want to accept.  For example, Internet Explorer can allow you to block websites that focus on just fighting or you can go higher up and block websites that have blood and gore for content.  This option is nice, but it may unintentionally end up blocking some “safe websites.”

A more direct approach to take is to outright block the websites that you don’t want your child to visit.  The parental controls that come with Internet Explorer easily allow you to do this.  What you will want to do is perform a standard internet search to find these websites.  For example, if you want to block social networking websites, perform a standard internet search with the phrase “social networking websites.”  Any websites that you find, you can simply just add them to your blocked list.

As you can see, parental controls are easy to install and you have a number of different options.  That is why you should get them set as soon as possible.
